DESCRIPTION

The Mathematics Coach position fulfills three roles: Instructor, Coach, and Teacher-Leader. As an Instructor, a specialist identifies students in need of additional instruction and establishes a schedule to provide targeted instruction during push-in or pull-out situations. As a Coach, a specialist works with teachers to identify areas of professional need and provide resources or strategies to address these areas. Specialists model lessons and assist teachers in planning lessons or units. As a Teacher-Leader, a specialist provides professional development for teachers, peers, and administrators which address curriculum, teaching strategies, trends, data analysis, National, State, School, and building initiatives. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborating with the principal to create a strategic plan for coaching to support and measure the impact of math instruction according to the science of math, school baseline data, and data from approved early math assessment systems. 
  • Facilitating schoolwide professional development and monitoring and measuring the impact of transfer to practice. 
  • Modeling effective science of math instruction for teachers that is explicit, systematic, inclusive of detailed explanations and more extensive opportunities for guided practice, error correction, and feedback. 
  • Coaching and mentoring teachers daily via planned coaching cycles based on data and gradually releasing responsibility to teachers.
  • Facilitating data analysis discussions and supporting teachers by using data to differentiate instruction according to the needs of students by adhering to the framework of tiered instruction. 
  • Fostering multiple areas of teacher professional learning, including exceptional student education and content area knowledge, and making adjustments based on data. 
  • Prioritizing time for those teachers, activities, and roles that will give the greatest impact on student math achievement, such as coaching and mentoring in classrooms, as evidenced by coaching logs, student impact data, and site visit data. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Alabama Teaching Certification 
  • Five (5) years classroom experience as an elementary and/or middle school math teacher 
  • Working knowledge of theory and research on the current best practices and instructional materials in math 
  • A record of collaboration in the professional Community 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teachers and administrators. 
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
